Although concrete is a solid matter, it is a porous material which means it absorbs liquids just like a sponge. Different liquid substances can seep into concrete from water to vehicle oil, greases and grime. Once the concrete has absorbed these liquids, it would be very hard to remove them. Sealing your concrete prevents liquid substances to penetrate its pores, ultimately prolonging the life of the concrete surface.

How do concrete sealers work as a protective barrier?

A concrete sealer changes the qualities of the concrete’s surface so that when water comes into contact with it, the water molecules form tiny blobs on the surface instead of penetrating it. Then, the water droplets just roll away from the surface. Sealing gives concrete the same protection against oils and grease so even these normally hard-to-remove stains become easy to clean. It also protects against de-icing salts so sealing is especially important on exterior concrete surfaces that go through freeze-thaw cycles. It also eliminates the problem of mildew penetrating the cement, which can leave black stains on the surface over time.

How does it affect the concrete’s appearance?

Sealers usually impart sheen to concrete surfaces drawing out the rich colours of decorative concrete. Any decorative concrete finish will look much better when sealed. Exposed aggregate concrete will definitely benefit from sealing because it enhances the beauty of the decorative aggregates (i.e. pebbles and small stones) in the concrete. A tinted sealer can be applied to a plain gray slab or decorative concrete to add colour. Regular application of a quality concrete sealer will make your concrete more resistant to fading and wear.

How often should concrete sealing be done?

There is no exact rule to this because several factors are involved, mainly the type and quality of the product you used, the location of the area and the conditions the concrete is exposed to. A sealer, depending on the exact product, may last from 1 to 3 years.

Basically, you should seal your concrete as soon as you notice the coating is starting to wear away. You should also reseal coloured concrete as soon as you see the need for it because delaying the work may result to a slight fading of colour.

You should consider traffic and weather factors. Naturally, concrete surfaces that get a lot of vehicle traffic and is exposed to sunlight will wear faster than, say, a covered concrete area with moderate foot traffic. This is why concrete driveways are normally sealed more frequently than patios or sidewalks.

Recommendations: Seal concrete driveways once a year, ideally during fall to prepare it for winter conditions. It is ideal to re-apply clear seal on coloured concrete that get heavy traffic or is exposed to harsh winter conditions every 1 to 2 years. Seal other exterior concrete surfaces (plain or coloured) that do not get vehicle traffic every 2 to 3 years. For interior concrete floors, it’s okay to seal them once but apply wax coating periodically. With periodic concrete sealing, the next coatings only need quick and thin applications.

So, should you seal concrete?

While the benefits of sealing are obvious here, some people still do not seal their concrete. Some say it’s not necessary if you live in a place that has a mild climate or don’t get much rain. But the truth is sealing improves the overall appearance and life of all types of concrete regardless of the location. So, if you want to protect your investment, there’s no question to it – you should seal your concrete.

There is a new discovery that every person who smokes should know about. This is called the electronic cigarette, also known as a smokeless cigarette or e-cigarette, and it is to change the legal landscape for smokers around the world. Patented Electronic Cigarette offers to effectively simulate the actual experience of smoking cigarettes, with no medical or legal issues surrounding the traditional cigarette.

Meanwhile, Electronic cigarettes look, feel and taste like traditional cigarettes, their functions are very different. You see, the actual electronic cigarette does not burn tobacco, but, when you inhale from a cigarette-e, you enable the “flow sensor” that releases water vapor containing nicotine, propylene glycol, which simulate the taste and aroma of tobacco. All of which means that the electronic cigarette allows you to get your nicotine fix while avoiding all cancer-causing agents found in traditional cigarettes such as tar, glue, hundreds of additives, and hydrocarbons.

In addition to being healthier than traditional cigarettes, and perhaps most importantly of all, is the fact that the electronic cigarette is fully legal. Because the Electronic cigarette not involve tobacco, you are legally able to smoke anywhere that traditional cigarettes are prohibited such as bars, restaurants, workplaces, even on an airplane. Furthermore, electronic cigarette allows you to smoke without fear of causing harm to others because of bad second hand smoke.

Refill cartridges come in different flavors as well as nicotine strength. You can get regular, menthol, even apple and strawberry flavors and strength of nicotine cartridges come not full, medium, mild, and. While electronic cigarettes are technically a “smoking alternative” than a device to stop smoking, the range of the power of nicotine offers some obvious potential as an aid in efforts to quit smoking and seemed to prove popular in the market.

The nice thing about electronic cigarettes apposed to say, nicotine patch, is that e-cigarette produces the same tactile sensation and an oral fixation that the desire of smokers, while also satisfying the desire of tobacco. When you take a pull from the electronic cigarette n you really feel your lungs fill with tobacco smoke and warmth when you exhale the smoke out of the lungs, such as regular smoking, however, as mentioned, the smoke is actually more healthy steam water that evaporates quickly so as not to offend anyone in the vicinity.

While the electronic cigarette has been around for a while in various incarnations, has the latest advancements in technology and increasing restrictions on smoking that have pushed e-cigarette into a new found popularity. If you are interested in healthy alternatives to smoking, or if you just want to have the freedom to smoke wherever and whenever you want, electronic cigarette may be the solution you have been looking for.

When it comes to carpet spot removal, there are a lot of factors such as the type of spot, duration and your carpet’s material that affect the whole carpet spot removal procedure. When you use spot removal chemicals or shampoos, make sure not to wipe it off because you may spread the spot to a larger area.

Choose a product to clean the spots on your carpet based on the type of spot. There are water soluble spots and chemical soluble spots so that only right removal material can ensure you the spots will be gone completely. When you work on the spot, work from outside to inner to make sure that you are not spreading the spot.

Never rub your carpet with anything as this can seriously damage the carpet. Make sure to avoid strong chemicals and bleach to clean the carpet because it can damage the carpet seriously. Avoid moisturizing your carpet heavily with the spotter and always try to blot the excess rather than trying to wipe it off.

There are different types of spot removal solutions available for chemicals, acid, fruit juices etc so choosing the right product for you is not a very tough task in most cases. However, you may not be able to completely eliminate all sorts of spots on your carpet with such products.

Another important thing to remember is rinsing the carpet after the use of cleaning agents. Once your spot removal procedures have taken place, lots of residue may be left behind. If the residue isn’t rinsed out properly, it can cause problems like re-soiling or the spot returning. To avoid these problems, simply pour a small amount of water over the carpet after your spot removal attempts are complete. Then extract with a small, hand-held wet vacuum machine. If you prefer to not pour water on the carpet, you can choose to instead take a damp cotton towel and gently wipe it over the areas you performed the spot removal. Using a wet vacuum is best, but a damp towel will work in a pinch.

Repeating the process with excess or with different products is not a wise idea as this can damage your product. If you are not getting good results, you should immediately seek the help of a professional carpet cleaning service. It’s better to spend a few dollars on a professional than to neglect your carpet and have ugly, stained carpet.

Cracking is one of the most common causes of customer complaints that concrete contractors deal with. Few homeowners are aware of the fact that new concrete normally cracks and there is no absolute guarantee against this. Nevertheless, while cracks cannot be entirely prevented, a professional concrete mason takes careful measures to minimise cracking.

Below are some of the common causes of concrete cracks that must be considered and the necessary preventive actions that should be taken.

There is excess water content in the concrete mix.

Adding too much water to the concrete makes the installation much easier but if the water content is more than enough, it will greatly weaken the concrete. Water content is also a major factor that affects drying shrinkage, which simply refers to the concrete shrinking when it hardens and dries. This happens because the excess water in the mix evaporates. Therefore, you can expect greater shrinkage the more water the mix has. When concrete shrinks, the slabs are pulled apart, resulting to cracks.

Solution: It is best to use the lowest required amount that will allow workability with the cement. Also, find out the maximum amount of water that is allowable for the cement mix that you are using so you can check if the consistency is overly wet. Additionally, avoid using high-shrinkage and small coarse aggregates. Professionals also install control, construction and isolation joints that help make the concrete crack at a predetermined spot.

The concrete is drying too quickly.

The drying process of concrete involves a chemical reaction that turns concrete from liquid to solid. Water is a requirement in this chemical reaction, which is aptly known as hydration. Hydration happens over days and weeks after pouring the concrete. Cracking happens when the drying process occurs too rapidly.

Solution: Adequate curing of the concrete is a must to ensure there is sufficient water for proper hydration to allow the concrete to achieve its maximum strength. Curing will also hold off drying shrinkage until the concrete has gained resistance to shrinkage. Chemical curing methods and the use of coverings such as canvas or burlap to retain moisture are some of the techniques used in curing concrete.

The concrete installed is not the proper strength.

Concrete comes at different strengths. Cracks can occur when you use the wrong strength concrete for your project.

Solution: Consult with your ready-mix concrete supplier to ensure that you choose the strength concrete that is appropriate for your specific use.

Another factor that can lead to cement cracks includes fluctuations in temperature. In a concrete driveway, for instance, the sudden changes in temperature could make the interior concrete expand with heat while the concrete surface cools and contracts. Such temperature differences when they become significant result to cement cracks. The settling of soil underneath the concrete also leads to cracking as the concrete foundation is no longer evenly supported. Corrosion of metal reinforcements eventually leads to cement cracks, too.

For all of these reasons, the best preventive action for customers is to make sure that the concrete installation is performed by an experienced concrete professional. It is also a great idea to educate yourselves about the facts of cement cracking so you would know if a crack should be a cause for concern.

Cory Grant is a second generation Decorative Concrete Professional. He is an enthusiast and enjoys sharing his knowledge on what he learns in the industry with other professionals and those who are seeking advice for their Decorative Concrete Project.

Imagine stepping out of your bath tub after a refreshing shower and landing on a wet and slippery floor! How many times have you clutched wildly for something to hold on to so that you do not slip in the bathroom? Obviously a shower cubicle is the best place to take a shower, but not many of us have the luxury of a bathroom big enough to hold both a bath tub as well as a shower cubicle. As much as you try but shower spray escapes through the curtain and leaves you wishing for a neat and effective solution to prevent water from splashing on the floor.

There are many types of shower screens available in the markets today to suit various styles of baths as well as cater to your limited space requirements. There are arched single screen, double or multiple screens and corner bath shower screens. The arched shower screen are cheap and do not obstruct access to taps for cleaning but they are not suitable for power showers and only shield a small portion of the bath tub. Double shower screens extend to about two thirds length of the bath tub but as they open out, there should not be any obstructions around which could damage or prevent it from opening.

Folding Shower Screens offer a perfect two-in-one solution, converting your bath tub into a shower cubicle and are ideal for providing over bath shower protection. These come with one or several panels which can be folded completely from inside or outside the bathtub. These panels form a small shower enclosure with transparent rubber or PVC seals at the bottom of each section and on the hinges, to offer complete tightness against water spillage. Moreover, they fold back flat against the wall in ´Concertina´ style which allows great usage of space. Not only are they easy to install and aesthetically pleasing but they also do not burn a hole in your pocket

The panels of the Folding Shower Screens are made of either tempered glass or acrylic and can be fitted on right or left hand side of the bath. Aluminum or steel frames housing the panels provide practicality with durability. The fixed panel is attached to the wall by a wall bracket and other panels are connected together by watertight hinges. These can extend along the bath, depending on the shower area required. An added advantage is that since they are not permanently extended these panels can be neatly folded back when not in use. The screen can be opened for a shower and stowed back to open the space when you want to relax in a bath.

Folding Shower Screens are a stylish and cost-effective addition in your bathroom. They not only allow the bath area to be converted into a shower, but also ensure that your expensive bath fittings are protected from constant spraying of water. So enjoy that shower now, without worrying about water pools on your bathroom floor!
